I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer in December 2007. Since then, I've been through Chemotherapy, a Mastectomy, Radiation and then Reconstruction. For 4 years, the cancer that is still in my spine, hip and pelvis was dormant, thanks to maintenance chemo treatments that I will be on for the rest of my life.  The drugs, one of which was brought to market by fundraised dollars from cancer walks, have literally saved my life. That's why I walked in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Weekend to End Women's Cancer. It was an amazing experience and I'm so proud of myself.

This year, the walk is more important than ever.  In December 2011, a bone scan revealed that the back pain I was experiencing was due to a tumor that stopped responding to treatment and had begun to grow and fractured a vertabrae.  So, once again I found myself in treatment.  So far, I'm doing well and the back pain has stopped.  Im hopeful that further tests this summer will reveal that I'm back in partial remission.  This is my life now.  I remain hopeful that my body will continue to respond well to the treatments that I will continue to have on a regular basis.  There is always a danger that my body will become immune to the treatment or the toxic treatments will do more harm than good.  These walks are so important because the money raised goes to further research that may find the treatment that will once and for all end my constant fight before it's too late.  I just need to hang on and keep fighting until that day comes.

This year, I was devastated to hear that my dear Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer.  I can now tell you that as tough as it to have breast cancer, it's even tougher to love someone who has breast cancer.  I'm so thankful that it appears to have been caught much earlier in my Mother.  I hate that she must battle this terrible disease and pray that she will win her fight.

Due to my ongoing treatment and my healing back, my Doctors tell me that I can't walk the 60 kilometers this year.  But, nothing will keep from this important event. I have agreed to be a crew captain this year and will join the wonderful group of volunteers who raise money with the walkers and then lend their support during the event so that the walkers have the best experience possible.  What will you do? I encourage you to join I Love Alberta Boobs and walk or crew. Will you help me by donating to the cause? Will you help yourself by getting a mammogram (or encouraging the women you love to get a mammogram)?

They say that one in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer; unfortunately the statistic is 100% in my immediate family. But, I'm fighting and am determined to win the battle with this deadly disease. I want to live to say that I'm a 50 year survivor of Breast Cancer. I owe my life to a drug that was developed out of research funded almost entirely by donations received from events similar to this one.

In the five years since the walk began in Calgary, 22.6 million dollars have been raised for Alberta research and assistance programs. Prior to the walk, the annual budget for breast cancer research was $300,000 per year. What a difference! Proceeds from the Weekend benefit the Alberta Cancer Foundation, funding important breast cancer research, education, services and care. So, the money that you give will stay here in Alberta and help fund the programs that I am directly benefiting from.

My Mom and I thank you for all of your support!
