Why I am Walking...

Recently I went for my annual mammogram. The tech was young, pleasant and efficient. She was reassuring. I've been through the squishing, and stuffing and ( in my case) the lighthearted apologizing for having "so little to work with" before. I go for my " mammo " every year. It's part of the routine.

In the summer of 2008, a friend of mine also went for her "mammo". But this time it wasn't routine. She had found a lump. She was characteristically optimistic. She had her surgery. She had her chemo.

She lost her hair.

She had good days and bad days. She bought a wig - came back to work and announced she was going to "do the walk". The Walk.

And so it was. We donated money and gave her verbal support. We said we'd be there and on July 25th, 2009 - the 60 kilometer Weekend to End Breast Cancer began. We were excited. We wore pink! We found the route and cheered her on...

But she walked alone.

This year she is walking again. I have decided to lace up my shoes and with a few other friends we will be walking with her. Each of us have been touched by her courage and her commitment. Each of us know other women who have been diagnosed with cancer. They are our aunts, sisters, mothers, colleagues, neighbours and friends.

This year 2010 "the weekend" has expanded to include all women's cancers. My goal is to raise $2000. Thank you for your support!

And I walk...

And the beat goes on!
Good news! Crockett's Rockets has met it's goal and our whole team is now able to walk on "The Weekend"! We recently held a very successful golf and silent auction at River Spirit Golf course. In addition we are raffling off a beautiful hand made quilt which was donated by a group of women we work with. I am constantly amazed by the overwhelming kindness and support we have received every step of the way on our journey to raise funds. Last but not least Sharon and I beat personal best records at the Scotiabank Half Marathon. Yea us!

Subaru Walking Half Marathon this weekend...
This weekend we are walking in the Subaru half marathon! It's all part of our training for the 60 km Weekend this July. There's snow falling today, and I am really hoping for a wee bit better weather on Sunday.
I am very near my fund raising goal now and would very much like to thank everyone for your support!

Spring has sprung...
... the grass ain't riz... hmmmm must be Alberta! We continue our training - now working on our interval training times of 5 minutes fast walking (aka "late for the bus") and 1 minute of slow walking (aka "window shopping"). It's getting positively balmy and we aren't used to walking without our 16 layers of woolies! The sun shines gloriously and the walking is great... bring on the tulips!

Hypothermic Half Marathon Complete!
Yesterday we finished our first official group activity - a wintery half marathon. The city is encased in spectacular hoar frost so the walk was beautiful. We did terrific! We walked a respectable average of 9.4 minutes per km and managed to keep fairly consistent throughout. Thank heavens for the sausages, bacon, eggs, fresh fruit and mountains of glorious hashbrowns that were waiting for us at the end. We w - we ate like lumberjacks! We received beautiful snowflake medals and felt like true athletes. We're taking the next few days off, before we resume our training for the Weekend the End Women's Cancer in July. Thank you for supporting my journey!

Valentine's Day 1/2 Marathon...
In just over a week Crockett's Rockets will be doing our first Hypothermic 1/2 marathon walk. We have been in training through a local running store since late October. We have been walking in the dark, in the snow, the wind, the ice, the slush. We have slipped and fallen but have never given up. There have also been a few glorious sunny crisp sub zero mornings that have made crawling out of bed all worthwhile. We are superwomen!

Winter Walking 2...
This morning we headed out for a 14 km walk. It was a gloriously sunny clear sky day, and we kept pretty toasty with our quick pace. I have to admit, I was anxious about the idea of winter walking with a goal to do a half marathon in February - but the walking is actually making winter enjoyable!
The added bonus? All this exercise lets me enjoy all that Christmas baking I did this year - bring on the butter tarts!

Winter Walking...
It's the week before Christmas, and we are walking! Crockett's Rockets have joined a walking clinic at a local Running Room and three of us have signed up for the "Hypothermic Half Marathon" in February. I am lacing up my runners and heading out for a morning 12 km walk around the Reservoir. It's -8 Celsius - in Calgary that's balmy! Walk Safe. Be happy.
