YOU PUT MEANING INTO MY EFFORTS!

As of last July, I have raised over $84,000 in the seven years of walking in the Weekend to End Women's Cancers! In 2011, my donations totalled $12,450 and I am eternally grateful to all of my amazing donors. Every year, I search for the right words to convey my appreciation for all of my dedicated donors who assist me in battling this devastating journey called cancer and thus, "I would thank you from the bottom of my heart, but for you my heart has no bottom" (author unknown).

Your dollars are helping and will continue to assist those who have been through it and will be in the future.
The Weekend has enabled the Alberta Cancer Foundation to invest more than $24 million into breast cancer research and programs in just a short time! They have launched more than 80 new research projects taking place at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, the Cross Cancer Institute and the University of Lethbridge. And they've made screening and earlier diagnosis possible for thousands of rural Albertans with two mobile facilities, fully equipped with state-of-the-art digital mammography.

But we can't stop here. This year more than 2,700 new women's cancer cases will be diagnosed in our province and sadly more than 600 women will lose their lives to breast and gynecological cancers. While we celebrate many milestones, we owe it to those we love to continue walking until we can prevent or cure all cancers.

As for a little history on me, many of you know that I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 (my youngest child was only two years old). There began a journey with hospitals, surgeons and plastic surgeons for the mastectomy, breast reconstruction surgery and smaller surgeries that I've had to deal with over the last while. June will be my 9 year anniversary, however, the journey for me has not ended - last August it was confirmed that I am a BRCA2 carrier. That means that I carry a breast cancer gene that has been passed on to me through the generations of my family and am now a high risk candidate for ovarian cancer and a second breast cancer. So, because there is a strong link to breast and ovarian cancer and because ovarian cancer is called a "silent killer", I had a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (ovaries and fallopian tubes removed) on May 3rd. That will eliminate approximately 95% of my chance of contracting ovarian cancer. And there is still the decision I need to make regarding a prophylactic mastectomy (preventative), which is a tough one. Having "been there and done that", that is not an adventure I have a strong desire to repeat! But, I am considering it carefully and am having additional breast cancer screening at this time. As you might imagine, this year's Walk and the money raised is even more important to me than ever before.

The Weekend to End Women's Cancer is a two-day, 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Calgary, taking place in July. Walkers, volunteers and donors can take pride in the knowledge that they are making a tremendous difference today and for tomorrow - as Albertans step up to the challenge of a Cancer Free Future.

Please consider donating - I will be very grateful for whatever you can give. And so will my three sons (and my little granddaugher!). Come July 21st and 22nd, I'll think of you every step of the way!

Kind regards,

Laurene
