Susie's Sweethearts at Finish Line - 2010
Susie's Sweethearts at Finish Line - 2010

Please help me help others...

After giving my ardent supporters 'a year off'; I am thrilled to be back at it this year. My participation in this walk, in 2010, with my close friend Erinn Oseen, was a truly wonderful experience and I'm certain that this year will be no different (well, maybe only different with regard to the hamstring cramps I suffered at the end of day 1 last time!)!!

Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women's Cancers is a two-day, 60-kilometre or one-day 32-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Calgary. I will be sure to have my iPhone along to document the well wishers we meet along the way (one of my favourite parts of the walk two years ago!)!

In the fall of '97 we lost my mom, Susan, to complications arising from 4th stage breast cancer. We were lucky that Mom's fighting spirit didn't give the 2 month prognosis, in February '95, a chance and that we had lots of opportunities to spend time together over the 2 1/2 years that followed. A few years ago my close friend, Donna, was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent both chemotherapy and surgeries; I am thrilled to write that Donna is doing great today.

There is no question in my mind that the money we raise, in this fundraiser and others, benefit many who hear the dreaded words, 'you have cancer'. I believe that the additional monies that go toward research and the services available to patients have made a difference, and continue to change the landscape of what it means to be a Cancer patient.  Two years ago the money raised went to the purchase of a state of the art bus that enabled technicians to do mammograms in rural areas, areas where the women would likely not have a mammogram otherwise.  Undoubtedly this investment has saved lives.

In December of 2011 my husband's brother, Mark, was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma. This is an aggressive form of cancer and, together with his doctors at the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic, Mark decided upon an equally aggressive treatment program.  Mark is strong willed, optimistic, young and healthy...we are all every hopeful for him.  I bring Mark's story into this because I fervently believe that research done on one type of Cancer can lead to breakthroughs for other types.  I believe that all fundraising, all research, and all support systems that are put in place, help us all, help society, and are helping to eradicate this apalling disease, in its many forms.

In a world filled with people and organizations looking for your hard earned dollars; I understand if you have allocated your donation dollars elsewhere.  However, if you have any dollars that need a home, I sure hope you will consider Susie's Sweethearts!

With love and thanks!
