The Day After the Terry Fox Head Shave!
The Day After the Terry Fox Head Shave!

Support My Journey,

This Weekend give the gift of a LIFETIME.

Something very near to my heart is the Shoppers Drug MartŪ Weekend to End Women?s Cancers, a life-changing 2-day 60km walk through the streets of Calgary on July 21 and 22nd, 2012.

Proceeds benefit the Alberta Cancer Foundation, funding breakthough research, screening initiatives and patient programs in the battle to end both breast and gynecologic cancers.

Each year (this will be my 4th time walking and 5th time raising money), I love to raise money for this cause and then I get go on an inspirational 60k walk through the streets of Calgary!  I can?t express how inspired I get from meeting some of the amazing people on my journey.

The walk raises money for more than research to find a cure.  I?ve seen some amazing initiatives and even benefited from them myself.  The first is that the weekend has covered Herceptin treatment which was not otherwise covered under provincial health care.  Compassionate care programs also help cover the cost of rent, utilities, transportation, medication and groceries for patients in need. Last year over the weekend, we were introduced to a journal that is being developed for cancer patients in Alberta.  It has space to write what medication people are on, what was said in an appointment, what foods could be eaten and how these things make a person feel.  As someone getting into the holistic care field I can?t say enough how helpful these journals will be.  The last and one of the more personally exciting features to me is the mobile screening units that we got to see at the walk.  They include mammography units and in the future can help with cervical screening!  These units can go to rural places in Alberta and reduce the distance women will need to travel for screening.  My Mom found her cancer on her FIRST mammogram.  I can?t say enough how grateful I am that my mother is here today because her cancer was caught early.  Now we go snowshoeing every Christmas and she tells me about her local dragon boat team (she lives in Nova Scotia now but was treated at Tom Baker).  Thanks to the weekend, I can make that journey to spend time with my Mom each year.

Another reason I walk is a friend of mine Karla, who died a few years back of Ovarian cancer.  I hope one day that her little girl never needs to fear ovarian cancer.  I know how scary it is to hear your mom say she has cancer (We are very lucky, we've had a few family members beat cancer!) But it is still a scary thing to hear. I'd like to think that in the future, when I have daughters that they will hear about it and be no more concerned than if I had appendicitis! No big deal! It can be fixed and no worry of it coming back. That is my dream.

My only request if you donate, is please send me an address so I can send you a thank you note!  It's very important to me that I have the opportunity to thank each and every person who sponsors me.

Please also, if you donate, make sure that whoever takes your donation is filling in a donation form or does it through the Weekend to End Women's Cancers website.  I'd hate to see anyone unfairly taken advantage of.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to drop me a note at: angie_robertson@live.com
