The Weekend to End Women's Cancers is a two-day, 60-kilometre  walk through the neighbourhoods of Calgary. It will be a challenge and I am ready to take on this endeavour to find a cure to breast and gynecologic cancers!

The Weekend has enabled us to invest more than $24 million into breast cancer research and programs in just five years! We have launched more than 50 new research projects taking place at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, the Cross Cancer Institute and the University of Lethbridge. And we have made screening and earlier diagnosis possible for thousands of rural Albertans with two mobile facilities, fully equipped with state-of-the-art digital mammography.

But we can't stop here. This year more than 2,700 new women's cancer cases will be diagnosed in our province and sadly more than 600 women will lose their lives to breast and gynecological cancers. While we celebrate many milestones, we owe it to those we love to continue walking until we can prevent or cure all cancers.

I was introducted to the cause through my girlfriend Nichole and her family as her Mom is a seven year Breast Cancer Survivor.  Hearing her stories about going through chemo-therapy, a bi-lateral mastectomy, losing her hair and the emotional rollercoaster their family experienced is truly inspiring.  It really goes to show how strong a family can be and how they come together to make it through the hard times.

My commitment is based on my realization that we each need to do our part in this fight. I can walk. I can raise funds to benefit the Alberta Cancer Foundation, a leader in the fight against all women's cancers. I can and choose to be a part of this movement to save lives. As a women's basketball coach who has worked with hundreds of young athletes, the unfortunate reality is that one out of every seven female players will be inflicted with one of these horrible diseases.

My motivation to walk is to prevent this from occurring and it is for this reason that I am asking for your support.  Any amount small or large is greatly appreciated and one day we will find a cure!
