Support My Commitment

The Weekend to End Womens Cancer is a two-day, 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Montreal, taking place 25-26 August , 2012.

Proceeds benefit the Jewish General Hospital, funding important breast cancer research, education, services and care.

In August 2011 our team, "Walk for Life" achieved the task that we had set for ourselves. That time five of us walked . The feeling that we experienced initially, was uplifting, being part of over 1800 people who showed their commitment to spend their week-end walking in support of the fight to end Breast Cancer and raised over $4.3 M. During the Walk on that Sunday we were visited by Hurricane Irene which made the experience that much more interesting and daunting. It also meant that when we finished there was no dry skin left among the five of us. Both Marilyn and I have decided, again for 2012, to continue with our family tradition of doing the walk in Montreal, for the eigth time. It is clear that our supporters and ourselves are helping to make a difference when we see the wonderful improvements that have taken place at the Jewish General Hospital year after year in the interest of battling Womens Cancers. All of us have been touched by the effects of Cancer and we think of those who have succumbed in the past and who are no longer with us to share their joy and sorrows with our families and friends. We will continue to do our small part in raising the needed money, training for the event which is quite daunting but rejuvinating and doing the 60 km walk for this worthwhile cause. As a special bonus in 2011 our daughter Catherina joined the program as a volunteer and has also signed on for 2012 as a crew member so our tradition grows. She was also able to walk with us for a piece which made us very proud. All we ask you to do is to support this very worthy cause and help us reach our goal. When we had completed the two days this past August we spent some time to consider what the effort had meant and the fact that the money that we had raised would go toward the overall fight to end Womens Cancers. The money raised will go far to ultimately defeat Womens Cancer, so we will do what we can and recognize that across this country many others have embraced this cause. Therefore I ask you again this year to be generous and support me in my journey and that of my team members. Thank you from my heart and YES we can make a difference. Over the past twenty or so years I have taken on different causes because it is my firm belief that it is the responsibility of every one of us not to wait for social agencies alone to help the sick and disadvantaged but that each of us must put our shoulder to the wheel to help and thereby, together, our combined efforts will go much further.
This past year, we trained and found that it made the effort somewhat easier and we have committed to train again in preparation for Aug 25-26 2012, because we realized this past year particularly that it does help to train and train a lot because that is our role, not only to do the Walk but also to look after ourselves so that we do not get hurt. This gives us the opportunity to think about the folks that we have lost to Womens Cancer and to strengthen our resolve to do everything that we can to help defeat this disease. If necessary again and again until we finally beat Cancer as we must.
