Donate to my journey and make this Weekend matter!

Pharmaprix(MD) Weekend to End Women's Cancers is a 2-day, 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Montreal. It's going to be a challenge, but I'm ready to do something bold and powerful in effort to end women's cancers once and for all.

My life was forever changed when my best friend, Courtney, gave me the news that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.  At 31 years old!  She was living in Edmonton at the time and I in Winnipeg.  I have never felt more lost, helpless and overwhelmed as I did that night.  Courtney and I have always been the colloquial "two peas in a pod", no matter the distance or time between seeing eachother or talking we always manage to continue to be one of the most important people in each other's life.  Part of that included, when necessary, helping eachother work through problems and tough situations - a role that we both seemed to master for the other.  But there was never a "tough situation" like this.  There was no friendship "how-to" manual that could have prepared me.  For the first time in our friendship, I worried about saying or doing something wrong.  I kept thinking, "if I feel this completely overwhelmed, how on earth is Courtney feeling?!".  What can I possibly say or do to help?  I am a researcher by training and career, so the only "control" I was able to command in this situation was by becoming a crash-course "expert" on all things breast cancer.  Anything to make things even slightly easier for Courtney (and make me feel like I had at least a small amount of power over this).

I never doubted that Courtney would be strong throughout this, but she blew me away by giving strong a new meaning.  She explained that she hit her low point the day after her diagnosis and woke up the next day swearing she never wanted to feel that way again.  And she didn't!  Unbelievable.  She rocked it all - with grace and her Courtney charm I might add!  I learned so much from her during this time.  And, if possible, our friendship grew even more in depth.  I also learned much about human compassion and was completely blown away by the kindness and support of Courtney's friends and even that of complete strangers.  It really helped me to see that breast cancer really does, unfortunately, hit too close to home for too many people.  I know I will never look at this disease the same way again.  My commitment is based on my neverending love for Courtney of course, but also for my fellow sisters, mothers, grandmas, daughters, nieces, and friends everywhere. It's based on the realization that we each need to do our part in this fight. I can walk. I can raise funds to benefit the Segal Cancer Centre at the Jewish General Hospital - a leader in the fight against all women's cancers. I can and choose to be a part of this movement to take down women's cancers!

I am over-the-moon happy to report that Courtney - more than two years after that terrible day - is healthy and happy.  Courtney has decided to pay-forward all the generosity and kindness she experienced during her treatment by spearheading her own amazing charity event whose funds are donated to a newly diagnosed young woman to help ease the financial burden so that she can focus on beating the disease.  I hope her (our) story inspires you to take a stance with me and join this life-saving adventure for all women. Breast cancer affects us all.  Be a part of my very personal journey - by giving, by walking with me, or simply by sharing my story with your circle of influence. Don't stand back and think about what you could have done - take that first step today! Take a chance with me - we have the opportunity to change thousands of lives, beginning with our own.

This isn't just my journey - it's yours, too. Make it a Weekend you'll never forget.

Your support is support for all of us, in some way...

 Love Dana
