Support  me in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers

My wife Shirley was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer in November 2012.

In the months that followed, I learned of five women who have touched my life profoundly were also battling cancer. They include two of my children’s educators, a dear friend of mine, a colleague, and—closest to my heart — Shirley.

The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers

On August 23-24, 2014, I'll be participating in a very special event called the Weekend to End Women's Cancers benefiting the Segal Cancer Centre at the Jewish General Hospital.  I’m doing it for people I care about deeply and I’m doing to make a difference for Shirley, for my friends and for people like them.

I've set my personal goal at $15,000. So, I need your help.

Having spent more days than I care to remember on the JGH oncology floor, witnessing Shirley and so many others receive their chemotherapy treatments, I can tell you, first hand, that the funds that are raised make a HUGE difference in patient care.  These heroes, and they are heroes, feel the benefit of these funds.  You can make a difference!

Having lived through the roller coaster of rising and falling probabilities of whether something is or is not cancer and the prognosis that follows the cancer diagnosis, I have come to the conclusion that statistics are meaningless to an individual patient.  For each of them, it is a binary outcome.  It will be found to be cancer or it won't, they will be cured or they won't.  Part of the proceeds from this walk go to research, working towards that cure that we so desperately need.  But, until we have a cure, people need care and treatment.  That’s where the rest of the proceeds go.  You can use the link at the bottom of this email to visit my site and make an online donation to support me.

Help stop cancer

According to the National Cancer Institute of Canada, approximately 20,500 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and about 5,400 will die from the disease. A further 8,000 Canadian women will be diagnosed with ovarian, cervical, or uterine cancer this year, and nearly 3,000 of them will die.

All of these women and the ones I know personally have faced this challenge with such courage that I have been absolutely inspired by them.  Although some are truly fighting for their lives, you would never know it from talking to them.  Hearing their stories and watching them fight has caused me to take action that will lead to the only acceptable outcome, a cure for cancer.  This horrible and indiscriminate disease must be stopped.

Help me raise $15,000

We may not be able to prevent these cancers but, we absolutely must find a cure.  A cure is the only acceptable outcome.  I want to be part of the generation that eliminates the question that currently follows a cancer diagnosis, “Will I be one of the ones that is cured?”  Please help me turn this dream into a reality.

Thank you for sharing in my journey and supporting our team.

Best regards,
