The Toronto Weekend to End Breast Cancer is a two-day, 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Toronto. Proceeds benefit The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret, funding important breast cancer research, education, services and care.
In the last two years I have participated in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer and it has been a profoundly life-altering experience. I cannot accurately describe the depth of my feelings. Despite the heat and minor sunburn/sunstroke year one, and walking in the chilled rain with a minor cold year two, with assorted blisters, the loss of two toenails (they grew back), body parts chaffing in places I cannot mention, and every single muscle and joint aching and stiff, I was overwhelmed with emotion and spiritually soaring high. I really didn't care about the pain, though I am (in hindsight) amused by memories of my attempts to climb a mere 14 stairs to my shower each year. I was then and remain incredibly glad that I did it, humbled and grateful for the opportunity to participate and to contribute, and for the gift of learning that with a little effort and determination I can accomplish miracles!
