Wig #2 (went brunette for a change!!) and steroid cheeks after my bone marrow transplant at Princess Margaret Hospital in 2001

Please Support My Journey

As a SURVIVOR of stage IV, grade IV non- hodgkins lymphoma I understand the impact that cancer has on an individual, their family and friends.

The Weekend to End Breast Cancer is a two-day, 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Toronto and proceeds benefit The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret.

Princess Margaret hospital is very special to my family and I as this is where I received the bone marrow transplant that saved my life. The doctors, nurses and support staff are phenomal but ideally we need to put them out of business!!

In these challenging economic times it is more important than ever to ensure that PMH gets the funding required to support research, education, services and care.

I will do the walking for you. Please help in whatever way you can. You will receive a tax receipt for your donation.

Thank-you for your consideration of this worthy cause. Mel.

Toughest part is finding time....
Instead of taking the car, I've been trying to walk wherever and whenever I can. I've walked to the grocery store and carried groceries in a back pack home. I've walked to meet my family at a local restaurant instead of going with them in the car. My longest walk so far has been 2 hrs through parks and streets in my community. I'm really enjoying my walks, but find the most difficult thing is finding the time .... I can't take my 5 year old with me as she can't keep up (yet!) and Its tough to decide to spend precious time away from her and Greg. Cottage roads are calling and a 9k trek into town is next on my list... maybe the family will meet me there for breakfast....

Blisters already???????
My first big walk with the ladies in the "hood" was excellent - fast paced, approx 6 km, and an early start allowed me to get Hayley dressed and off to school on time. I've started parking the car after work and then walking 1.5k to get Hayley at school and then we walk 1.5k together home. Double benefit of increasing her physical activity level as well.
Somehow the boots I wore ALL winter gave me a blister on my right foot. Apparently these tootsies need some toughening up!!
Hayley and I did another 2km yesterday at the cottage -- that's about all she can handle right now - looking forward to increasing her endurance and strength through my training.
My heel is healing and I look forward to other fast walks with the ladies.....shin splints, here I come!

And so it begins....
I connected with some neighbourhood moms who have been walking in the mornings.....met them today at 6am and they are fast walkers -- A solid hour of walking and talking....so far, so good, but I'll see how I feel tomorrow!!
I have a feeling I might be going to bed a little earlier than normal tonight.....
