I am currently being treated for invasive breast cancer at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. I was previously treated at Princess Margaret Hospital (as it was then named) ten years ago. I am participating in the Week-end to End Women's Cancers because I have a deep appreciation for the exceptional, cutting-edge care that I am receiving at Princess Margaret. I have access to the newest and best therapies that are being tried world-wide. I want to raise funds to support the work of the incredibly dedicated, compassionate and hardworking team of doctors, nurses, medical professionals, and volunteers who have made Princess Margaret Canada's leading cancer research hospital and one of the top 5 comprehensive cancer care centres in the world. I want to bring attention to the huge difference they are making in the lives of their patients each day. I want to support them in their ongoing research, patient care and survivorship programs. The work at Princess Margaret benefits patients across Canada and around the world. Thanks to the expertise of the team at Princess Margaret, I and many others have a very positive prognosis.

I want to tell you about some of the people who make Princess Margaret a world-class cancer care centre. In particular, I have had the great fortune of having the extraordinarily talented, compassionate and indefatigable Dr. Alexandra Easson, Surgical Oncologist, perform my surgery in both 2002 and 2012, and follow me during the intervening years. She inspires me with her optimism, confidence and skill. Each of her cases is urgent and she is there for each of her patients.  I am lucky to have the pro-active and caring Dr. Lee Manchul as my Radiation Oncologist. During our very first visit, she introduced me to Dr. Eitan Amir, Medical Oncologist, because she thought that I may especially benefit from participating in a clinical trial of a promising new drug that Dr. Amir is heading. I am fortunate to have Dr. Amir in charge of my chemotherapy and other drug treatments, to participate in his clinical trial and to have him follow my case for the next 13 years. As well as leading ground-breaking research, Dr. Amir has a particularly helpful practice of making detailed notes when explaining technical treatment matters during appointments, and then giving these notes to patients to take with them. I and many other patients have benefitted from drug treatments that have been developed through previous clinical studies. I hope that the clinical study I am participating in will benefit many others. The wonderfully kind and responsive Barbara Lake, Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator, has been there to guide me every step of the way as I progress through my treatment. I cannot adequately describe the incredible care provided by Linda Cresswell, Chanelle, Leila, and the many other extraordinary, expert, tireless nurses who have been treating me every three weeks in the chemotherapy unit since last August and who will continue to see me for intra-venous drug treatments every three weeks until next November. Dee Simpson, the delightful personal trainer who volunteers to bring good cheer and support to patients in the chemotherapy unit, has been a true ray of sunshine.  Princess Margaret leads the world in advancing radiation precision, safety and effective delivery. The radiation technicians who I saw daily during my radiation therapy in January and February are incredibly skilled and efficient. They and a whole host of others including those involved in the survivorship program at Princess Margaret make it an incredible place. I have also come to know many patients and their family members and friends who accompany them to chemotherapy, who are deeply thankful for the care they are receiving at Princess Margaret.

The Shoppers Drug Mart® Weekend to End Women’s Cancers™ is a 2-day, 60-kilometre or 1-day 32-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Toronto on September 7 and 8. My sister Andrea, our Team Carroll Captain, wanted to do something significant in the fight to end cancer, so she decided to do this walk. Then my sisters Heather, Debra and Elizabeth (who together with my sister-in-law Eva have been taking turns accompanying me to chemotherapy), my daughter Allison, my husband Steven and Debra's daughter-in-law Iris joined. I have also joined.  It’s going to be a challenge, and I don't know whether I will be well enough by September to do the walk, but I want to do what I can in the effort to end women’s cancers.

One out of seven Canadian women will develop breast or a gynecological cancer. My commitment is based on love for our daughters, sisters, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, nieces, friends and colleagues everywhere. It’s based on the realization that we each need to do our part in this fight. I want to do what I can. I can hopefully walk at least part of the way! I want to raise funds to benefit The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre – a leader in the fight against all women's cancers.

I have been blessed with an incredibly supportive family - my husband Steven, our daughters Allison and Elyssa, my parents Marion and Bruce, my sisters Debra, Janet, Elizabeth, Heather and Andrea, my brother Jeff,  sisters-in-law Angela, Sarah and Eva, and brothers-in-law Alan, Albert, Phil, Donald and Alan, neices and nephews and wonderful friends and colleagues. I have also been blessed with my incredibly supportive law firm McCarthy Tetrault LLP- our CEO Marc-Andre Blanchard, my law partners, associates, colleagues and assistant Dianne. And I have been very fortunate to have the life-saving care and treatment offered by Princess Margaret.

I want to give back. I ask you to take a stance with me and join this life-saving adventure for all women. Please be a part of my very personal journey by giving, by walking with me, or simply by spreading the word about the exceptional work being done at Princess Margaret. Please don't stand back and think about what you could have done – take that first step today! Please take a chance with me – we have the opportunity to change thousands of lives.

Thank you so much!
