Support My Journey for Strength

It's not every day that you receive life-altering news that shakes the foundation of your entire existence but when it happens, there is nothing you can do to prepare yourself. News like that can devastate you, it can cripple you, and it can remind you of just how fragile we all really are. So when it happens, life-altering news, it?s never easy. It is a poignant reminder of how fragile life is and how much we value it.

Last year, my friend Heather received such life-altering news, the kind of news that you don't hear every day.  Heather found out for the first time that she had cancer. For anyone to be afflicted with this terrible illness, it's unfair to be so full of life and love and be forced to join the millions of people worldwide who are also fighting for their lives and for their love ones' lives. Heather was a warm and wonderful person who could connect with people in a way few people can. She was smart and funny, charming and honest, respectful and kind, and most of all, she was full of life. And one year ago, this wonderful person received the terrible news that unfortunately is not confined to just her. Millions of other people also share this burden, and they can only sit and wait for a miracle.

Today, I wish I had better news to share with you. I wish I was talking right now about something wonderful and pure and magical, maybe a miracle that deserves the world's attention, maybe a medical breakthrough of a cure to cancer that could be the headline on every newspaper in the world, and years from now, we can all remember fondly where we were when we first heard this life-altering news that changed the course of human history: We have cured cancer.

But sadly, the news I have is not good. Only a few weeks ago, after a short six month battle with cancer, my friend Heather passed away. For those of you who don't know her, she represents the friend and loved one we all have, she is everyone we've ever confided in for advice, she is everyone we've ever laughed with, and spoken with. She is everyone we've ever shared a memory with, everyone who has made us smile and everyone who has ever touched our hearts. And most importantly, she is everyone we've ever loved.

This September, I am taking part in an important cause, the Weekend to End Women's Cancers of which I am dedicating to the memory of my friend Heather.

Please support me and thw Shoppers Drug Mart team and join me in raising money and awareness for this fundamental cause that we all share, to end cancer and to preserve the sanctity of human life, particularly lives as wonderful as Heather's.
