"When you don't have a choice, you can do anything!"

These words have rung true by witnessing my amazing cousin Lisa Motsch battle through her journey with Cancer.  In July of 2009, Lisa was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer (which means the cancer had spread into the lymph nodes) after her son Logan, innocently bumped her breast with his head when he wanted to cuddle and read a story. Lisa under went a lumpectomy in September and quickly began her chemo treatments which lasted a year including 35 sessions of radiation.

Happy and relieved to be finished her treatments for the next couple of years she resumed her life as a normal school teacher.  In April of 2012 she noticed she was having difficulties with her memory, and her speech was being affected especially while at school.  Knowing something wasn't right Lisa went to speak with her doctor and told him something was wrong in her brain.  After some persistence, a CAT scan found a large tumour the size of a plum in her left brain.  After beating breast cancer to hear you now have brain cancer, was devastating for her and our whole family.  By June, Lisa had a huge orange sized tumour removed from her brain and doctors were shocked that she was still functioning because of its mass.  Lisa was doing well for the first 2 days post surgery but then contracted a severe life threatening infection that kept her in the hospital for weeks.  Lisa slowly recovered from the infection and underwent another 22 sessions of radiation treatments.

Today, Lisa is doing well! As in anyone's road to recovery, there are good days and bad days, for example; due to possible seizures, she is no longer able to drive, but she has accepted these roadblocks and obstacles with the utmost grace, positivity, strength, humor, determination, and courage that I have ever seen.  She is one TOUGH COOKIE!!

The Weekend to End Women's Cancers is a 2-day, 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Toronto. I'm ready to do something... in an effort to end all types of cancer against women.  It's going to be a challenge, but I will walk, because I wish for a time where no one will EVER hear those 3 little words... "You have cancer".  Because people need to be educated - EARLY detection saves lives.  I am walking in honor of Lisa and everyone who has been touched by cancer... those who have fought hard and lost their battle, those who are still fighting, those who have survived...and all the AMAZING people in their lives who cared for them and supported them along the way.  If Lisa and others can be strong enough to handle these adversities; diagnosis, treatments, and recovery, I can certainly do my part and raise funds and walk 60km to help.

I ask you to be a part of my journey - by giving, by walking with me, or simply by sharing this story.  I've learnt that when it comes to cancer; it can happen to anyone at any moment, without any notice.  -This is an opportunity to change thousands of lives, beginning with our own.
