Team Carroll has expanded: My sister Andrea created Team Carroll in 2013. My sisters Andrea, Heather, Elizabeth and Debra Carroll, daughter Allison Carroll Goldman, husband Steven Goldman, and friends Cynthia MacDougall, Godyne Sibay and Bill Richardson walked in the 2013 Weekend. Although it poured rain for the entire duration of our 32 K walk on the Saturday, it was a deeply moving experience. Great things resulted from that Weekend. Team Carroll was one of the top fund raising teams. Bill Richardson is now a member of the Board of the Princess Margaret Foundation.

Announcing Team McCarthy Tetrault: For the 2014 Weekend, we have transformed Team Carroll into Team McCarthy Tetrault. My law firm, McCarthy Tetrault, has been incredibly supportive and generous in this cause and our team is growing to include more members from McCarthy Tetrault, our friends, families and clients. New team members include Sharon Kour, Lisa Constantine, Suzanne Murphy, Lara Nathans, Jessica Bishop, Nicole Blinoff, Kristina Bockarov, Helen Fotinos, Kathryn Munn, Jessica Munn, Mary Theresa Murphy, Carole Piovesan and Michael Winterstein.

What your Donations are used for: I am participating in the Weekend to End Women's Cancers because I want to do what I can to help fund the advancement of cancer treatment and a cure. Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is the leading cancer research hospital in Canada and one of the top 5 comprehensive cancer centres in the world. The work being done at Princess Margaret benefits patients with many different kinds of cancer across Canada and around the world.

I am inspired by what the funds raised by the Weekend are being used for. I am particularly excited about the new drug CFI-400945 that Dr. Tak Mak and his team at Princess Margaret have started in Phase 1 clinical trials in 2014.  In the lab this new drug has been effective in slowing the growth of several different kinds of cancer - breast, ovarian, colorectal, glioblastoma, lung, melanoma, pancreatic and prostate cancers.  The funds to discover and now to bring this drug to clinical trial were raised by the Weekend to End Women's Cancers.   In taking CFI-400945 to clinical trials, Dr. Tak Mak is collaborating with Dr. Dennis Slamon of UCLA.  Dr. Slamon discovered that Herceptin was effective in the treatment of HER-2 Positive tumours, a drug I have benefitted from.  It is extremely rare for an academic group to have discovered and advanced a novel "first-in-class" drug to clinical trial.  The funds to discover and now to conduct clinical trials were raised by the Weekend to End Women's Cancers. Funds are needed to keep Dr. Tak Mak's work going.

Princess Margaret Cancer Centre has also started its first clinical trials of Immune Therapy, an exciting area of innovation in cancer therapies. It now has the most comprehensive Immune Therapy program in Canada, funded in part by The Weekend to End Women's Cancers.

Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is leading the way in a revolution in cancer care: Personalized Cancer Medicine, which is also supported by the funds raised for the Weekend.

The very important Survivorship Program at Princess Margaret and the University Health Network also receives financial support from the Weekend.

I have a deep appreciation for the exceptional, cutting-edge care that I have been receiving at Princess Margaret for invasive breast cancer. I have access to the newest and best therapies that are being tried world-wide.

I want to raise funds to support the work of the incredibly dedicated, compassionate and hardworking team of doctors, nurses, medical professionals, and volunteers at Princess Margaret. I want to bring attention to the huge difference they are making in the lives of their patients each day. I want to support them in their ongoing research, patient care and survivorship programs. Thanks to the expertise of the team at Princess Margaret, I and many others have a very positive prognosis.

I want to tell you about some of the people who make Princess Margaret a world-class cancer care centre. In particular, I have had the great fortune of having the extraordinarily talented, compassionate and indefatigable Dr. Alexandra Easson, Surgical Oncologist, perform my surgery in both 2002 and 2012.  I am lucky to have the pro-active and caring Dr. Lee Manchul as my Radiation Oncologist. I was fortunate to have Dr. Eitan Amir, Medical Oncologist, in charge of my chemotherapy and other drug treatments, to participate in his clinical trial and to have him follow my case for the next 13 years. I and many other patients have benefitted from drug treatments that have been developed through previous clinical studies. I hope that the clinical study I am participating in will benefit many others.  I cannot adequately describe the incredible care provided by Linda Cresswell, Chanelle, Leila, Manny and the many other extraordinary, expert, tireless chemotherapy nurses. Dee Simpson, the delightful personal trainer who volunteers to bring good cheer and support to patients in the chemotherapy unit, was a true ray of sunshine. Princess Margaret leads the world in advancing radiation precision, safety and effective delivery. The radiation technicians who I saw daily during my radiation therapy in January and February are incredibly skilled and efficient. They and a whole host of others including those involved in the survivorship program at Princess Margaret make it an incredible place. I have also come to know many patients and their family members and friends who accompany them to chemotherapy, who are deeply thankful for the care they are receiving at Princess Margaret.

The Shoppers Drug Mart® Weekend to End Women’s Cancers™ is a 2-day, 60-kilometre or 1-day 32-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Toronto on September 6 and 7, 2014.

One out of seven Canadian women will develop breast or a gynecological cancer. My commitment is based on love for our daughters, sisters, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, nieces, friends and colleagues everywhere. It’s based on the realization that we each need to do our part in this fight. I want to raise funds to benefit The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre – a leader in the fight against all women's cancers.

Incredible support from Family, Friends and McCarthy Tetrault: I have been blessed with an incredibly supportive family - my husband Steven, our daughters Allison and Elyssa, my parents Marion and Bruce, my sisters Debra, Janet, Elizabeth, Heather and Andrea, my brother Jeff, sisters-in-law Angela, Sarah and Eva, and brothers-in-law Alan, Albert, Phil, Donald and Alan, nieces and nephews and truly wonderful friends and colleagues. I have also been blessed with my incredibly supportive law firm McCarthy Tetrault LLP - our CEO Marc-Andre Blanchard, my law partners, associates, colleagues and assistant Dianne and all the people who make up McCarthy Tetrault. And I have been very fortunate to have the life-saving care and treatment offered by Princess Margaret.

I ask you to join in this life-saving adventure for all women. Giving, walking, or spreading the word about the exceptional work being done at Princess Margaret are all ways we can help. We have the opportunity to change thousands of lives.

Thank you so much!
