It's been 5 years this January since I heard the words, "you have cancer".

The news came as a huge shock to both me, and my family.  I ate right, exercised regularly with a running group, I was in the best shape of my life.  This couldn't be because I had done everything right.  I am forever grateful to my Ob/Gyn who sent me straight to the experts:  Princess Margaret oncologists.

Princess Margaret said I was one of the youngest women at that time, to be diagnosed with endometrial cancer (the lining of the uterus).  They said I didn't fit the current profile of a women with endometrial cancer, however, I did have a family history that consists of various cancers.  Before my surgery, they consulted with other experts in the form of a tumor board to decide what to do.

After my operation, the tumor was Staged at Stage 3A.

This meant removing 36 lymph nodes and 6 rounds of Chemotherapy.

It's been five years...

Five very difficult, emotional, tiring years...and I'm extremely lucky.

Lucky to have such amazing family and friends who have surrounded me with love, support and positive vibes.  Lucky to be surrounded by the best medical teams a girl could ask for.  Lucky to have a group of friends that formed a group called the "Womb Mates" in the middle of my chemo treatments to lift my spirits and walk the Relay for Life.  In 2010, the Womb Mates supported me again, by making a huge sacrifice to raise money and walk in the 2-day 2010 Princess Margaret Walk to End Women's Cancers.

As part of my survivorship journey, I am determined to keep the Womb Mate legacy alive by training for and walking to raise funds so we can conquer cancer in our lifetime.  The Weekend to End Women's Cancers is a 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Toronto, but more importantly, an event where I can say thank you and give back to the many individuals who supported me through the toughest fight I've ever faced.

I've seen the strength and determination in all the people I've met who fight bravely and silently against this terrible disease called cancer.  The proceeds of this event benefit The Campbell Family Institute at the Princess Margaret Hospital, funding important cancer research, education, services and care that will benefit those suffering from endometrial cancer and all women's cancers.

I'm walking for my daughter, my mother, my god-mother, my grandmother, my aunt, my cousin, my friends - for all the wonderful women in my life AND I'm walking for YOU.  I ask you to join my Circle of Hope. Be a part of my very personal journey by joining this team and walking with me, or simply by giving.

Thank you for your generosity and supporting my journey.

See you at the finish line!

Love,

Marla xo
