My name is Karley Albrecht and I was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario. After completing the Radiation Therapy program at Laurentian University I worked as a Radiation Therapist at Regional Cancer Care, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and recently had the amazing opportunity to return home this past Winter to work as a Radiation Therapist at Northeast Cancer Centre, Health Sciences North.
Why am I participating in the Weekend to End Women's Cancer?
Although my career is just starting, I have already had the opportunity to meet so many inspirational women of all ages that come in for radiation treatment. The relationships I have built with these amazing women coming in for treatment everyday for sometimes up to 6 weeks in a row have made me want to do more than just provide support throughout radiation treatment. By participating in the Weekend to End Women's Cancers walk it's another way of showing my support and respect to all of the women out there who have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer or Gynaecological Cancer.
In addition to showing my support and respect to all the strong beautiful women out there going through, or who have gone through cancer treatment, there is one woman in particular who I will be walking for at the Weekend to End Women's Cancers. This particular person holds a special place in my heart, and I call her Mom. This past year, my sister and I received some unexpected news. Our mother had been diagnosed with uterine cancer at the young age of 54. We have decided to participate in this challenge in order to return the love and support we have received throughout the years from her. It is time for us to do something BOLD and brave to show our appreciation!
...Below is a little bit of information about the Weekend to End Women's Cancers.
The Shoppers Drug Mart® Weekend to End Women’s Cancers™ is a 2-day, 60-kilometre or 1-day 32-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Toronto. It’s going to be a challenge, but I’m ready to do something bold and powerful in an effort to end women’s cancers once and for all.
My commitment is based on love for my fellow sisters, mothers, grandmas, daughters, nieces, and friends everywhere. It’s based on the realization that we each need to do our part in this fight. I can walk. I can raise funds to benefit Princess Margaret Cancer Centre – a leader in the fight against all women's cancers. I can and choose to be a part of this movement to take down women’s cancers!
I ask you to take a stance with me and join this life-saving adventure for all women. Be a part of my very personal journey - by giving, by walking with me, or simply by sharing my story with your circle of influence. Don’t stand back and think about what you could have done – take that first step today! Take a chance with me – we have the opportunity to change thousands of lives, beginning with our own.
This isn’t just my journey – it’s yours, too.
Make it a Weekend you’ll never forget.
Please donate to my journey and make this Weekend matter!
