The Women in Mining Are Walking Again (The Little Team That Could!)

On September 6 and 7, 2014 the Women in Mining Walking Team will be walking in the Shopper’s Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancers. The two-day, 60-kilometre walk through the streets of Toronto is an annual event benefiting the Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. In eleven years, the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers has raised more than $141 million. The walk is part of the Believe It campaign which was launched by the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation in 2012 with the goal of raising $1 billion over the next five years, and to conquer cancer in our lifetime.

Thanks to the generous support of friends, family, and colleagues in the mining industry, the WIM Team has raised $478,000 in seven years, making us one of the top fundraisers - 11th place across the country - in the history of the walk. This year we were once again the recipient of an award from the Princess Margaret Hospital in recognition of the team’s achievement. Our team’s goal for 2014 is to raise over $250,000 this year increasing our total to $750,000.

Agnico Eagle Mines is helping us get there. Agnico and friends will match every $2 that we raise with another $1, until we reach $250,000. This helps your donation go further.

We are also receiving assistance and energy from Women Who Rock, a brand new social club dedicated to supporting and empowering dynamic women as they develop their career in the mining industry.

The Women in Mining Toronto Branch is celebrating its 45th year in 2014. What better way to celebrate than to help the WIM walking team reach our goal, and at the same time help the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre conquer cancer in our lifetime.

  • Encourage your company to donate on behalf of the WIM team walkers.
  • Make a personal donation.
  • Join the WIM team.

There will be lots of opportunities over the summer to train as a team, including a day trip to Niagara, a 10-km walk, and a well-deserved glass of wine at the end! Additional strategies for fund-raising will be discussed to ensure that everyone on the team meets their goals.

Thank you for your support. Together we will make a difference.
